IntroductionThe hydrocyclone (commonly referred to as a cyclone) is a simple, efficient, and versatile separation device that uses centrifugal force to separate particles or immiscible liquids based on density differences.
Unlike traditional separators that rely on gravity, a hydrocyclone accelerates the settling process by generating a powerful centrifugal force field—tens to hundreds of times the force of gravity—within a compact conical-cylindrical vessel. The feed mixture enters tangentially under pressure, creating a strong swirling motion. This forces heavier or coarser particles outward against the wall and downward to the underflow discharge, while lighter or finer particles move inward and upward, exiting through the overflow pipe.
With no moving parts, low maintenance requirements, and minimal space demands, hydrocyclones offer an economical solution for continuous, high-capacity separation across a wide range of applications.
Working PrincipleThe operating principle of a hydrocyclone is based on centrifugal sedimentation:
- Tangential Feed Injection: The slurry or liquid mixture is pumped tangentially into the cylindrical feed section at a controlled pressure and velocity, generating a high-speed rotational flow.
- Centrifugal Separation: Within the vortex, the centrifugal force accelerates heavier or coarser particles toward the wall, while drag forces from the fluid act in the opposite direction. Particles with sufficient mass migrate outward, spiraling down the conical section.
- Underflow Discharge: Coarse/heavy particles exit through the apex (spigot) at the cone tip as the underflow stream.
- Overflow Discharge: Fine/light particles remain in the inner vortex and travel upward, exiting through the vortex finder as the overflow stream.
- Critical to Performance: The formation of a stable air core—a central column of air drawn up through the apex—is essential for efficient classification. If the air core is disrupted (e.g., by excessive solids causing "roping"), separation efficiency drops significantly.
ApplicationsHydrocyclones are used across diverse industries for two-phase (solid-liquid or liquid-liquid) and, increasingly, three-phase separations.
- Mineral Processing-Classification, desliming, ore beneficiation, closed-circuit grinding control
- Mining & Aggregates-Sand washing, fines recovery, tailings dam management, dewatering
- Oil & Gas-Deoiling produced water, desanding, drilling fluid recycling, three-phase separation
- Water & Wastewater Treatment-Grit removal (sand from well water), sludge thickening, solids removal from industrial effluent
- Chemical & Food Processing-Solid purification, slurry concentration, pulp and paper processing
- Agriculture & Algae Harvesting-Sand/manure separation, microalgae harvesting (for large-aggregate strains)
- Typical separation range: 2 μm to 350 μm, with capacities from a few m³/h to over 500 m³/h depending on size and configuration.
